Use of NACE Rev. 2.1 in reporting to AnaCredit
Updated version of NACE classification of economic activities (NACE Rev. 2.1) to be applied under AnaCredit from January 2026 onwards
Question
The European Commission has released version 2.1 of the NACE classification of economic activities (NACE Rev. 2.1), which updates current NACE codes for reporting economic activity, as required by Annex IV of the AnaCredit Regulation.[1] NACE Rev. 2.1 will be used in European statistics as per the roll-out schedule of Article 2 of Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/137.[2] Furthermore, the clarifications on the Use of NACE Rev. 2.1 in European statistics provided by the Commission indicate that, for some statistics, there will be a period of double reporting, with countries submitting statistics broken down according to both NACE Rev. 2 and NACE Rev. 2.1. Please clarify how this update affects the reporting of economic activity of counterparties under AnaCredit.
Answer
The current NACE classification, Revision 2, as specified in Regulation (EC) No 1893/2006,[3] will be updated to NACE Rev. 2.1 through Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/137 as of 1 January 2025, with several specific derogations.[4]
Immediate compliance with the updated classification is not required, as data providers will need time to adapt to the new regulatory requirements. In several countries, the new NACE classification will only become available in the national statistical business registers during the second half of 2025.
For AnaCredit reporting, as outlined in the AnaCredit reporting manual,[5] only one version of a code list can be valid at any given time. To ensure harmonisation and comparability of AnaCredit data across all Member States, NACE Rev. 2.1 will become the valid code list for reporting the economic activity of counterparties as of 31 January 2026. Until then, i.e. up to the reporting reference date of 31 December 2025, the NACE classification code for economic activities should continue to be based on the original NACE Rev. 2.
